Fostering Harmony with Mike Toby

May 15, 2024

Disagreements and differing opinions are common in special education. However, when these move to conflict and dispute, many people look to alternative dispute resolution processes. The Independent Child Advocate (ICA) should be a component of any robust ADR program. Independent Child Advocates are committed to helping families and schools work towards agreement. ICAs utilize conflict resolution techniques to ensure that the student remains at the center, while the IEP team works towards agreement. This presentation will center on the role of the Independent Child Advocate and what this means for families, schools and IEP team members. We will discuss how the ICA currently operates in the Sonoma County SELPA.
